CHEVRON MULTIMILLION NAIRA COTTAGE HOSPITAL, WASTING AWAY AT OPOROZA

*Community says project has failed and substandard

*Foundation expresses confidence on its completion

Residents of Oporoza Community, the traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State have lambasted Chevron for the abandonment of the multimillion naira supposed Cottage Hospital.

A visit by Gbaramatu Voice Newspaper to the scene of the abandoned cottage hospital allegedly built by Chevron in Oporoza reveals that overgrown weeds have taken full possession of the entire premises.

It was further learnt that snakes, reptiles, eerie birds and all sorts of dangerous animals now roam about the surroundings of the facility.

The windows are getting dilapidating, roof is already in a finished state, the walk way is no longer visible as the scary sounds of birds are continually heard.

According to the Chairman of Oporoza Community, Mr. Johnbull Demebi, he scolded Chevron on the project while noting that the facility is already a failed one, stressing that if completed it would bring about employment and also laid to rest the health challenges faced by members of his community and people of the entire Kingdom.

The Chairman also condemned the project while describing it as a substandard venture, he alleged that if Chevron is to execute any project to the people of Oporoza, it should rather be the standard of Chevron and not this type of project that is bellow its standard.

Meanwhile reacting on behalf of the Egbema-Gbaramatu Community Development Foundation,EGCDF, Comr. Sheriff Mulade, Executive Treasurer of the foundation explained that it is working out modalities to resuscitate the project.

” Funding is a major challenge, contractors are not helping matters, all though government have since donated some materials to be installed, if completed health personnel will be drafted from the government circle, I believe that with more seriousness on our part, the project will come to limelight”. Mulade noted.

However, a source within Gbaramatu Kingdom that would not want his name to be mentioned in print admitted that it was sordid for the project to be in such a deplorable condition despite the huge fund allotted to it.

“We as leaders of the area are not doing enough, we are supposed to know what we are facing as a people that are undergoing a lot of marginalization, deprivation and experiencing all sorts of dehumanization both from the Government and the Multinational Oil Companies operating in our areas, we ought to annex the little resources we have to add value to our communities” The source stated.

He particularly frowned at the deteriorating scheme of things on the part of the leadership of Egbema-Gbaramatu Community Development Foundation, while accusing the body of not really prioritizing the project as a basic necessity.
