ROBBERS STORM GOVERNMENT HOUSE ANNEX, WARRI

Dare devil armed robbers on Thursday afternoon stormed Government House Annex in the oil-rich city of Warri, Delta State and killed a driver in a failed attempt to rob a vehicle believed to be conveying huge amount of cash to officials in the annex.

Eye witness account said the driver and some staff of Government House, Annex had gone to bank to withdraw money for logistics needed for the Delta State Waterways Security meeting holding Thursday at the Annex.

It was further gathered that the robbers laid wait for the vehicle conveying the cash at the entrance of the premises of the Annex by the Edjeba Expressway.

According to the account, the robbers blocked the vehicle as it was about to enter but the driver managed to brush aside the blockade and escaped. He was however unlucky as the robbers shot at him fatally while trying to escape.

Our Correspondent also learnt that the wounded driver was said to have driven the car with the money safely into Government House before he was rushed to the hospital, but he died on the way. Mobile police men on guard at the Annex gave the robbers a hot chase but could not apprehend them.

When contacted on telephone at about 2:45pm, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for “B” Division, CPS, Eyoh Aniete, confirmed the robbery incident.

He said his men were on manhunt for the fleeing armed robbers. He disclosed that one armed robbery suspect has been arrested and was being interrogated if he was among the gang that stormed the Government House Annex.
