Opobo kingdom marks 200 years of its founding monarch

As Opobo Kingdom celebrates the 200th birthday of its founder and first monarch, King Jaja, federal lawmaker representing Andoni/ Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency, Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, has sought for setting up a foundation for him.
Hon. Abiante, who spoke on the anniversary of the king’s birth marked by Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King Dandeson Jaja, at the weekend in Opobo, said Jaja lived an exemplary life.

He said King Jaja pioneered many areas of interest in the nation’s life and as such, needs to be immortalised.

The federal lawmaker disclosed that few years ago, he proposed a King Jaja Historical Centre which he said the Federal Government failed to fund.

Abiante reasoned that the centre which would have served as a research centre and museum would have helped in preserving the legacies of Jaja.

“If you look at Jaja from any angle, he fits into the shoes of a freedom fighter. He fits into the shoes of an industrialist. He fits into the shoes of a leader. His several character depends on the area you are studying,” he stated.

One unique area, he said Jaja pioneered in the country was in the area of customs and excise.

“How many of you know that Jaja created the first customs and excise by insisting on handshakes from every oil exported through his territory? So, there are many things that could be learnt from him”, Abiante added.
