Niger Delta’s Urgent Need: Learning from Kano State’s Education Investment

By GbaramatuVoice Editorial Board

The stark contrast between Kano State’s recent investment in education and the educational landscape in the Niger Delta is glaring. Under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kano State has taken a significant step by sending 1001 students abroad for postgraduate programs, an initiative that showcases the transformative power of investing in education.

The question that emerges is: Why hasn’t the Niger Delta, with its considerable wealth and the 13% derivation fund, prioritized the provision of quality educational opportunities for its youth?

Why, despite their abundant resources, haven’t Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, Sim Fubara, Governor of Rivers State, Godwin Obaseki, Governor of Edo State, Eno Umo, Governor of Akwa-Ibom State, and Bassey Otu, Governor of Cross River State, followed Kano’s example in investing in their youth’s education?

The 13% derivation fund, initially intended to catalyze development in the region, often falls short of its potential. The time has come for the governors of the Niger Delta states to borrow a page from Kano State’s playbook and make a resolute commitment to invest in education.

Education is more than just a fundamental right; it is the bedrock of personal growth and nation development. By focusing on providing high-quality education, the Niger Delta can unlock the potential of its youth, equipping them to take on leadership roles, just as Kano State’s successful scholars have risen to key positions in the state’s government.

Niger Delta governors, it’s time to shift the focus. It’s time to channel the region’s abundant wealth into building a brighter future for our youth.

GbaramatuVoice call is clear: Invest in education, empower our youth, and lay the foundation for lasting growth in the Niger Delta. It’s a path the region not only deserves but desperately needs.
