Delta State Government has waded into the recent protest against Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) by the people of Kokodiagbene community, Gbaramatu kingdom Warri South West Local Government Area of the State.

The people of Kokodiagbene community recently staged a peaceful protest to the Chevron run Otunana flowstation demanding for electricity supply to the community and capped their protest with a 14-day ultimatum to the company.

At the weekend, the community raised the alarm over alleged plan by American oil giant, Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) to clamp down on leaders of the community over their recent demand for electricity supply from the company and implored the State Government to call the company to order.

Gbaramatu Voice gathered that on Monday, February, 20, 2017, the State Government invited some of the leaders of the Community to Asaba for a meeting with a view of resolving the issue.

The meeting, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon Festus Ovie Agas in his office, started at about 2.30pm and was rounded up at 3.45pm.

According to a source, the State Government pleaded with the people of Kokodiagbene community for time to engage the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited on the matter.

“The SSG assured the Kokodiagbene community of the commitment of the State Government to make sure that the community benefit not only from multi national oil companies, but including the State Government” our source said.

It was further gathered that the representatives of the community expressed gratitude to the State Government for intervening in the matter, but they advised Government to act fast on it as they have had several failed promises.

The representatives of the Kokodiagbene Community, it was learnt, equally appealed to the State Government to come up with immediate solution before the end of March so as to calm the people, that the ultimatum was open, but not endless and implored Government to do the needful and Chevron Nigeria Limited must comply with their demands.

Gbaramatu Voice also gathered that the meeting was attended by the Chairman of Warri South West Local Government Area, Hon George Ekpemupolo; the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Oil Matters, Barrister Bosin Ebikeme and a representative from Chevron Nigeria Limited, Mr. Daniel Agbofode.
