Flood: DESOPADEC distributes relief materials to Ijaw ethnic nationality

As part of its resolve to providing succor to the flood displaced victims in the state, Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, distributed relief materials purchased for the victims of the ravaging flood waters that have overwhelmed and taken over almost all the communities in the Ijaw mandate area.

The Managing Director/CEO of DESOPADEC, Bashorun Askia Ogieh while monitoring the distribution exercise, said he came personally to see to it that the items were equitably distributed to the affected communities in the four local government areas of Burutu, Bomadi, Patani and Warri South West.

He also commended the efforts of the Executive Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Amb. Shedrack Agediga and the Ijaw ethnic representative, Dr. Paul Bebenimibo.

He stated that DESOPADEC as a responsive interventionist agency of the Delta State government ably led by his Excellency, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa had agreed to provide succour to the plight of her people.

In his words, “I am here to ensure effective distribution of the purchased items. I am also happy for the performance of my officers from the Ijaw ethnic nationality because what I have seen here is quite amazing and given the fact that about three quarters of our people in the Ijaw ethnic nationality have been affected by the flood, one cannot expect less.

“I want to also commend that every one of these items should be sent to people particularly those who are not in the camps now.

“We want to reach out to our people who have been impacted by the flood, whose livelihood has been altered in the process of this flooding and DESOPADEC as a very responsive interventionist agency has decided to reach out to all the ethnic nationalities, the oil producing communities and beyond that have been impacted negatively. This is what we are doing.

The items distributed to the affected local governments were bags of garri, bags of rice, bags of onions, bags of beans, noodles, vegetable oil, palm oil, toiletries, foams, among others.

On his part, the Chairman of Patani local Government, Hon. Isaac Aguana, who spoke on behalf of the LG chairmen, after receiving the items, appreciated DESOPADEC for their good gesture.

While noting that they were not expecting gifts of such magnitude from DESOPADEC, the Council Boss hinted that the Executive Governor of the state, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and his wife are equally doing everything in the book to alleviate the sufferings of the people.
