The people of Oburukirighan community in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State have cried out to Chevron Nigeria Limited over what they described as constant destruction of their source of livelihood.

The community made the plea yesterday through its community Chairman, Mr. Stanley Oleke disclosed to Gbaramatu Voice Newspaper that the movement of Chevron thug boats and other boats moving at the Escravos river have completely destroyed our fishing properties.

According to the Chairman: “The constant destruction of our fishing properties occasioned by the movement of these heavy thug boats belonging to SPDC, others and particularly Chevron Nigeria Limited have brought untold hardship to my people, we don’t even have access to the Government and its developmental agencies, we are a people that have remained nearly forgotten, we barely manage to buy these fishing properties in order to survive but look at where we are today, Chevron supply boats that passes through the river nearly every night have rendered our fishing materials useless, the most annoying thing is that we can’t even confront them as these thug boats are under the protection of the Nigerian Navy and Army that are escorting them, we are indeed so helpless” Mr. Oleke stated.

The Chairman also called on the attention of the Warri South West Local Government Council authorities, the leadership of Egbema -Gbaramatu Communities Development Foundation, EGCDF, and both the Nigerian Navy and Army authorities in Delta particularly the Warri axis to put an to this grave injustice that is brewing silently.

The Oburukirighan community leader have also demanded compensation for the destroyed properties so far, stressing that properties worthing millions of Naira have been damaged already.
