…tasks government to address contentious regional issues
In order to avoid widespread violent actions that would bring pains to the people of the Niger Delta, a Human Rights activist and a Community Leader from Gbaramatu Kingdom, Comrade Sheriff Mulade has appealed to members of the dreaded Niger Delta Avengers not to carry out its planned attacks, adding that they should keep their powder dry.
Dreaded militant group, Niger Delta Avengers had threatened to blow up the Nigeria’s deep sea oil platforms within days including the Egina FPSO in a New Year Massage released on Wednesday.
The Egina floating production storage and offloading (FPSO), which departed the yards of South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) on a journey to Nigeria on Wednesday, October 3, last year, according to reports is expected to be deployed in the second half of 2018, after the remaining topside module integration and commissioning is completed.
The militant group, in the message signed by its spokesman, ‘Maj. Gen’ Murdoch Agbinibo said it would launch attacks on the oil facility and other deep sea platform in the next few days.
But Comrade Mulade, the immediate past Chairman of Kokodiagbene Community in Gbararmatu kingdom, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State, on Thursday in Warri, pleaded with the militant group not to carry out the threat as it would bring pains to the people.
According to the Environmentalist; “I want to strongly appeal to the Niger Delta Avengers to shun any planned attack and give peace a chance, because we are not ready to experience any unpleasant hardship and activities that will further destroy our already deteriorated environment. ”I therefore, want to call on the Federal Government, Governors in the Niger Delta Region, and multinational oil Companies operating within the Region to take measures and adopt a proactive non-violent approach to avoid any act capable of throwing the region into security nightmares”.
The Activist who is also the National Coordinator of Center For Peace And Environmental Justice (CEPEJ) added that;”I also want to call on leaders of the Region to step up and take responsibility by engaging the militant group to avoid this unnecessary planned attacks and government at all levels to confront and address the fundamental needs and demands of the people”.
“Government cannot continue to pretend not to be aware of the needs of the people. This posture has given birth to the various militant groups who have continued to take advantage of government failure to issue threats on behalf of the people of the region and this has greatly affected our environment, tarnished our national image and threatened the growth of our economy”, the Activist said.
