An open letter to Peter Obi on his call to Obidient members to vote Labour Party’s candidates

By GbaramatuVoice Editorial Board

The recent directive by Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra state and Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the just concluded Presidential election in the country, calling on all members of Obidient Group, to vote Labour Party all the way in the forthcoming governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections, may look good in principle, but in the applied sense of the words, GbaramatuVoice believes that there are so many things wrong with such declaration.

For a better understanding of where this editorial comment is headed, it is important to emphasize that Obidient Movement is a new political pressure group in the country that championed Mr. Peter Obi’s presidential quest because of their believe that he (Obi) is a man of impeccable character. The membership cuts across political ethnic and religious divides but united by demand for good governance.

Without doubt, while GbaramatuVoice may agree that Mr. Peter Obi is of impeccable character and fortified with good leadership acumen, not so can be said of all other Labour Party members particularly the party’s governorship candidates.

Obi and members of Obidient Group had earlier told the world that they are for new order in the nation’s political geography. They have equally told all that care to listen that they are neither interested in party, tribe, religion, creed and other affiliations, but committed to deepening good governance in the country.

Going by the above ideology, GbaramatuVoice is tempted to ask: Why Mr. Obi is directing members to vote for only the candidates of Labour? Is that not a serious contraction? Has Peter Obi forgotten that most of these candidates came from other political parties and as such cannot be trusted?

Have members of Obidient Movement automatically transformed to members of Labour Party? If not, why the clamour for members of Obidient Movement to vote Labour Party candidates all the way? Is Obidient Movement no longer a movement anchored on ideology as ealier claimed? Why the current imposition and insistence that members queue behind only on Labour Party candidates?

If Obi is clean as claimed by Obidient Movement, will that translate to every Labour Party candidate being clean and capable? Can’t member be encouraged to go all out and cast their votes based on candidate’s profile, competence, character, accomplishments and programme, as against voting under the blanket name called Labour Party.?

While GbaramatuVoice encourages Mr. Peter Obi to ponder on the above issues raised, the newspaper in the interim holds the opinion that Mr Peter Obi’s latest declaration and decision was wrong.
