9 persons, including parents of groom die in Bayelsa road accident

Nine persons lost their lives including parents of a groom and his sibling in an accident that occurred in the evening of Saturday, in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa state.

The unfortunate incident which threw the state into mourning, was said to have occurred at the Gloryland drive at Igbogene area – a suburb of the state capital .

It was gathered that the accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a Toyota Highlander Jeep.

The bus was said to be conveying guests to Sagbama in the Sagbama Local Government Area in the state after a marriage ceremony.

The Sagbama Local Government chairman, Hon. Embeleakpo Alale, and the Member representing Sagbama  Constituency 1- Hon (Dr.) Godbless Nanaotumieyeseigha, briefed the press shortly after visiting the accident victims receiving treatment at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri and Tobis Hospital, Yenagoa.

He described the incident as a huge loss to Bayelsa and the Izon nation, and prayed for souls  of the departed.

It was gathered that a top female Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  stalwart in Ogbia LGA was  identified among victims that died .

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Police Command has commenced investigations into the fatal car accident that killed nine persons and injured several others.

A statement signed by Asinim Butswat – Police Public Relations Officer, said “the unfortunate accident occurred on Saturday 4th December, 2021 at about 1700hours, along the Glory Land drive, Igbogene, involving a Toyota Hiace Bus with Reg No. AKL 652 YP and a Toyota Forerunner Jeep with Reg No. KMK 923 AA. Sketch marks of the scene were taken, the cars were also evacuated to the Igbogene Division for further inspection.

“The corpses of the victims were deposited at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, while the injured passengers are responding to treatment at the same facility.”
