Delta LG Polls Outcome And the Need To Move The State Forward

By GbaramatuVoice Editorial Board

The recent Delta state local polls held on Saturday 6th January, 2018 against all permutations of violence has come and gone recording an appreciable peace and success when juxtaposed with that of previous years. This development/milestone in our views calls for celebration by all Deltans.

Again, the Delta State Government and the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) as the architects of this resounding success needs to be commended.

While the above groups have been recognized, GbaramatuVoice deems it necessary to congratulate the winners, now newly sworn-in local council chairmen and councilors in all the local government areas of the state for their good conducts during and after the electioneering campaign.

In the same manner, our commendation goes to those that lost, particularly members of the opposition, for their good conducts and their visibly demonstrating the spirit of sportsmanship.

Having said this and as part of our corporate tradition in GbaramatuVoice, we would like to draw the attention of both the state actors and Deltans to their responsibilities towards making the elected council officials a memorable.

To the executive governor of the state, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, having known him as a true democrat, the news organization will urge him to provide the council officials with the needed support as well as fight to overcome the temptation of making the local council an appendage of his office as witnessed in some states.

To the newly sworn-in council officials, while GbaramatuVoice again congratulates you, we are also seizing this same avenue to remind you that you have an enormous responsibility on your hands; the expectations of the people that voted you are high and it is our advice and hope that you will not fail Deltans.

It is also our hope as well as that of the entire Deltans that you prove to be above board/incorruptible in the day-to-day administration of the council.

To support the above, we trust that you provide the people with purposed/centered leadership through the execution of projects that will impact positively and directly in the lives of the people and not embarking on white elephant projects.

Again, it will be for the greater good of the people and greater on the part of your administration to be creative in income generation without waiting for the conventional sources, the federal and state governments. We therefore encourage you to seek creative but legitimate ways of increasing your local council Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

To the people, the newspaper firmly believes that you gave them your vote, hence, you should give them unalloyed support as they make efforts to bring that needed democratic dividend to your doorsteps.

In the same manner, as we congratulate those that lost for the pragmatic demonstration of good sportsmanship, we call on all to collapse every political machinery and team up with the current administration in moving their respective councils forward.

Having said all these, as a law-abiding corporate organization that promotes justice and fairness, we encourage candidates and political parties with credible complaints to approach the election petition tribunal or better still a court of competent jurisdiction to seek justice.

As we once again offer our congratulations, we urge all Deltans to bury their political differences and work together in moving our dear state forward.
